Groundhog Day: Shadow or No Shadow?

“It’s been such a long winter.”

You may hear this quite a lot if you live in a northern climate.  Winter seems to wear out its welcome by early February and many start thinking about the warmer and brighter days of spring.

Groundhog Day is a movie starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.  The main character keeps waking up to the same day again and again.  Looking out your window at the cold and snow, you might feel the same way in the middle of winter.  Groundhog Day is also a holiday that takes place on February 2.

If you didn’t know, Punxsutawney Phil is a very famous groundhog.  Some say he is mythical.  Some believe he is real.  Every February 2nd, Phil emerges from his burrow at Gobbler's Knob.  If Phil sees his shadow, we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter.  If he does not see his shadow, we’ll have an early spring.

Who’s hoping for a cloudy day? Or a total eclipse?

Many of us appreciate an early spring, but more often than not, Punxsutawney Phil predicts 6 more weeks of winter.  For the optimist, a 6 week prediction means winter is at least half over. So do you see the winter half over, or your driveway half full?

This seems like so much pressure to put on a groundhog, asking him to predict the winter for the whole northern hemisphere.  Or at least for the whole northern United States. No wonder Phil wants to run back and hide in his hole.  Millions will be angry at Phil if he sees his shadow and the poor little guy can’t control if the sun shines in the sky.

I feel sorry for Punxsutawney Phil.  How about you?

Whatever the prediction though, CashCrate wants you to have a wonderful day. Stay warm. Stay inside. Have a cup of hot chocolate, and make some money with surveys.

Happy Groundhog Day everyone, and to Phil, we’re wishing you the best.
